Saturday Night is Alright (For Psych)

Tomorrow night the Relax Bar is hosting a most interesting lineup for those who like music that messes with your head.   Three of the bands are making their way to Austin for South by Southwest.  Here are the details:

SATURDAY March 14TH 2009
12am to 123am Wildildlife
1115pm to 1145pm White Witch Canyon
1030pm to 11pm Super Giant
945pm to 1015pm The Gun Slingers
9pm to 930pm Prognosis Negative
Doors Open 830pm

$10.00 AT THE DOOR 21 AND OVER

I caught WILDILDLIFE opening for Mammatus last year at the Echo and they stole the show.  They're playing the Aquarius Records showcase in Austin, and here's a taste of that store's review of Six, their full-length:

We dug the first ep from SF transplants Wildildlife, who just so happened to feature our very own Matt in mailorder on guitar and vocals. A blown out tripped out heavy as fuck space rock psychedelic freakout of the highest order. Since then, not only have the band changed their name, to the much weirder and somehow more appropriate Wildildlife but also honed their sound into something somehow more blown out, more tripped out, heavier, weirder, but more importantly, WAY catchier. Hooks and melodies that most bands would kill for, but Wildildlife play it like it's no big thing, burying that stuff under avalanches of processed guitars, throbbing howling bass pedals, metallic Iron Maiden like riffing, insane chaotic drumming, and a fierce white hot wall of sound....And the one time we caught them live, we were hanging in a hammock, above the stage, IN A BUS, getting rammed repeatedly by the headstock of the guitar as the two axemen dueled wildly in the outrageous confines of the space below. Barring that sort of intimate and surprisingly painful interaction with Wildildlife, this record will definitely serve as an ideal introduction to their damaged and druggy fucked up metallic noise rock space pop, at least until you too can be battered and bruised by these guys in the flesh!

But get there early because you'll find quality as soon as you arrive.  And from France.  Julian Cope named GUNSLINGER's debut, No More Invention, his album of the month for August 2008.  If I could only write like Mr. Cope:

For this Gunslingers disc rages with references to Lucifer in much the same manner as our beloved Blue Öyster Cult chose to do throughout their career. Herein, Lucifer is not only invoked as the beautiful Keltic Godman we enlightened types have come to accept, but also as the still-evil Crosstian Opposer of all things good. And, contained in that mysterious netherworld doorway, the music of Gunslingers rages and rails against EVERYTHING (positive AND negative), one moment surging forth soul sparks of life upwards into the heavens, the next moment shifting direction furiously and drilling into the very crust of the earth with all the Gay Abandon of a MacAlpine’s earthmover. Pragmatic Motherfuckers these guys ain’t, children. They commence their debut LP with the two-minute-hate of ‘Into The Garage’ then jettison all reason by following it with the record’s longest piece, the apocalyptically Cunted (and Lucifer dedicated) genius of ‘Light Slinger Festival’. Thereafter, separating each successive song from the next is as futile as time-shifting back to the ‘70s and attempting to point out Billy Bremner’s shorts as they spun around in the Leeds United washing-machine. We’re talking Total White-Out, ladies’n’gentlemen; the kind of swirling snowblindness only Roald Amundsen’s South Pole Expedition could have imagined.

So if those descriptions don't intrigue you, you've got to find a new dispensary.  And while you there, be sure to congratulate Eddie for getting signed up recently by both Neurot Recordings and Orange Amps.

Megadeth to Headline The Golden Gods Awards

So with the addition of MEGADETH, this new metal awards show at Club Nokia on April 7th is looking like a good time.  And don't think this is like the rest of those awards shows - I've been told each band will be playing multiple songs.  Expect 4-5 from MEGADETH, and just maybe Kanye will join them for "Wake up Dead." Stay tuned for a ticket giveaway next week.  Here's the press release:

Iconic thrash band MEGADETH has just been confirmed to headline the first annual EPIPHONE Revolver Golden Gods Awards, presented by the Honda Fury on April 7 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles.  America’s first-ever hard rock and heavy metal music award show will be broadcast on MTV2 as a one-hour special debuting Saturday, May 2.  The ultimate evening of heavy music will also feature performances from Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, All That Remains and Suicide Silence, along with a very special DJ set from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to kick off the event.  The night will culminate with rock legend Ozzy Osbourne being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

After over 20 million albums sold worldwide, metal legends Megadeth remain at the top of their game. The band are the reigning kings of thrash, with a classic catalog that stretches from Rust In Peace and Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? to their latest critically-acclaimed creation United Abominations. Megadeth has headlined stadiums around the globe for 25 years and influenced a generation with their classic sounds, incendiary and thought-provoking lyrics and screaming guitars.  The band is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to 2007's United Abominations which will see its release in late '09.

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine commends Revolver on the awards, noting: "Finally a heavy metal award, of the people, by the people, and for the people!  This evening's line-up of talent is a heavy metal fan's wet dream! Only Revolver would have the credibility to make our dreams come true with the First Annual Golden Gods Awards.  To see Ozzy get a lifetime achievement is long overdue.  It is an honor to say, ‘YES! Megadeth will headline!’…I doubt Jethro Tull will be getting an award."

Hosted by actor/comic Brian Posehn (“The Sarah Silverman Program”), the night--a celebration of one of rock’s most enduring and fan-supported genres--will also feature special appearances by Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, Glenn Danzig, Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Puscifer, Jonathan Davis of Korn, Alice In Chains, Vinnie Paul, Scott Ian, Olympic gold-medalist Shaun White, Chuck Billy of Testament, Protest The Hero, Marta Peterson from Bleeding Through, Isis, Ken Susi and Trevor Phipps of Unearth, Brendon Small from Dethklok, Steel Panther, WWE wrestler CM Punk, Sirius XM radio host Jose Mangin, Chaos radio host “Full Metal Jackie” and many more.

Rock fans have the opportunity to experience this incredible night of rock and roll for a low ticket price. A limited number of tickets are now on sale to the public via Ticketmaster.com, select Macy’s, all Ritmo Latino stores and 800.745.3000.  Tickets for Club Nokia events are also available from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday at the STAPLES Center Box Office.  General admission tickets are $35.00 and VIP tickets are $75.00.

Linkage

  • TROUBLE's live CD from its rare stop here last year is available for sale.  It's a chance for those of who us didn't make to hear how bad we fucked up.  That show was supposed to be at Safari Sam's but ended up elsewhere.  I just can't remember what elsewhere is.  (Heavy Planet)
  • One of my more rewarding finds of last year was Brooklyn's WHITE HILLS from Brooklyn.  Another completely solid pick by Aquarius.  As far as I can tell, Dave, the main guy, was basically running the whole thing out of his place.  One of those deals where the CD definitely was sent by him.  So it's reaffirming that THRILL JOCKEY signed them up, making their shit finally readily available to the masses that read Pitchfork.  But I'm not worried about Dave - he's going to do his thing.  WHITE HILLS will be on the roads of Europe with FARFLUNG.  THe Italians will lose it.  And Thrill Jockey - PONTIAK, then WHITE HILLS.  I wonder who is responsible for this.
  • The final lineup for Thrasho De Mayo IV, May 1st @ the Knitting Fatory, has been announced with German thrashers EXUMER as headliners.  They are sure to bring that vintage 80s sound because they haven't released anything since then. (SMN)
  • An interview with Ian Barry of BLACK MATH HORSEMAN by a intriguing new blog called The Obelisk.  I caught them for the first time last week at the Blue Monkey and was quite pleased that I did.  There's a lot of potential here.  Danny Carey of TOOL was in attendance.  I'm looking forward to seeing an audience at SXSW take them in.  (The Obelisk)

Intronaut Cracks the Skye

So back when I started all this I wrote about INTRONAUT's Spring tour with NACHTMYSTIUM, KYLESA and THE HAUNTED.  Well, that tour is no more.  The almighty MASTODON has claimed INTRONAUT and KYLESA for its own.  We asked Intronaut's guitarist/vocalist Sascha Dunable a few questions about it all:

How did this tour come about?

Well we got submitted for it, like with any tour, and somehow we got picked.  I don't know if Danny and Joe both touring with them in other bands had any effect on it, but it’s possible.

Are these the biggest venues you have ever played?

A lot of the places have names with the word "theater" which would make me assume so.  We normally play places with the words "bar", "club" or "shit hole" in the name.

Any cities you're particularly looking forward to playing?

As always, New York and Brooklyn.  There are also lots of Canadian shows in cities I haven't been to since I was a little kid (most of my moms family is from Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia), so I might see some relatives.  Also, touring through there will be cool since we never have.  The whole east coast is always the best shows, so all of that really.

I know this tour cannot include Los Angeles because of Mastodon's appearance at Coachella - you have any plans for warm-up gigs in Los Angeles?

Well we are playing The Echoplex on April 17th with Kylesa and Made Out Of Babies, which is the day Mastodon are at Coachella I think.  Nothing before that though.

Will Intronaut be trying out any new material on this tour?

No, we don't have any!  Not show-ready at least.  We haven't actually been on tour since the last album was officially released, so we should probably play those songs for people.

What's the plan for the next album?

After this summer we will be taking some time off to write it, I think.  There are some ideas floating around, but we still have a long way to go.  Maybe we'll record late in 2010?

Last time I saw Mastodon, their drummer Brann Dailor was wearing a King Diamond shirt - what are your thoughts on the King?

I've never really been a huge fan, but for some reason I have seen him live like five times.  But yeah, Mercyful Fate and King Diamond never did a whole lot for me.  I met his guitarist, Andy LaRocque, once and he was really nice to me.

You have any thoughts on fellow co-openers Kylesa? From what I've heard of the new album, it sounds they're taking their sound to a new level?

I just got their new record, and I think it is definitely their best yet.  The production is awesome, the drummers sound great together, and the riffs are crushing.  I actually haven't seen them play in many years, so I'm stoked to see them now and hang out or whatever.

In a Warehouse Down by the River

This event should be a real good time.  EARTHLESS and BLACK COBRA come through town on occassion and always destroy, but this is a rare local appearance for Japan's psych/doomsters ETERNAL ELYSIUM.  They're in the area recording new material so we just might get to hear some of that.  Take note that the location for the show is different than I had posted before.
