Not so local but newsworthy nonetheless - YOB has completed work on its new album due out July 14th entitled The Great Cessation and posted an MP3 that is everything I wanted it to be. Now they must return to LA. (Profound Lore)
We still have a pair of tix to see THE MEATMEN on Friday at Relax Bar. For all you diehards, frontman Tesco Vee's bobblehead is here.
CLUTCH is coming to LA with Baroness on July 21st - go here to lsiten to some new tracks from Strange Cousins From The West. (Metal Insider)
Local boys INTRONAUT have been gone for a long time playing rock stars with Mastodon and Kylesa, so if you miss them like I do, check out this interview from one of my favorite cities, Montreal. I hope they stopped by Wanda's. (Blabbermouth)
One result of Intronaut's absence is that my guitar plaing has gone to shit. But help has arrived in the form of Bob Balch's (Fu Manchu) website, www.playtheriff.com, with lots of video lessons and guest instructors from the likes of Torche, Exodus, Three Inches of Blood, Pelican and many more.
On Sunday, May 31st, a double feature of Brutal Cinema with a live performance by DOLEMITE PROJECT at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. How can you go wrong with Goregasm and Black Devil Doll - He's a Muthafuckin' Puppet!?
Friday May 22nd, THE MEATMEN are returning to the City of Devils for a show at the Relax Bar withIT'S CASUAL, Tony Alves's GENERAL FUCKING PRINCIPLE and others. Tesco Vee will be fronting them; that is all you need to know. As I waxed philosophic about the mighty MEATMEN, The Editor began to panic at the prospect of another Professor Bunkum publish or perish submission. So I’ll keep it short (relative to past performance).
You think you are ahead of the underground? How about starting a little fanzine called Touch & Go in the 1979 and bailing out before the label of the same name got started. You think you are punk? How about having Ian MacKaye produce your solo EP and getting the Minor Threat band to back you up.
Finally, you think you are an equal opportunity offender to the arrogant, self-important and/or ignorant denizens of this wasted landscape?? Puhlease…How about these gems among dozens of others:
“I’m Glad I’m Not a Girl,” “Tooling for Anus,” “Crippled Children Suck,” “French People Suck,” “Pope on a Rope,” “Vegetarian on a Stick,” “I Sin for a Living,” Orgy of One,” “True Grit,” “Wine Wenches and Wheels,” “We Hate this Riff,” “Petrified Whitey.” The Meatmen in Hollywood this Friday night. I might even drag out Ed Colver from his art bunker. Hope to see you there.
OPETHdelivered a nearly two hour set of their trademark prog/death metal to their loyal following last night at the Avalon. At their Wiltern show last fall, they promised to return this year to more properly support their latest and most successful U.S. release, Watershed. Although they gave us three songs from that album, they played just as many from albums put out last decade. Nobody was complaining.
We already announded BLACK COBRA will be playing a free show Saturday night at Mountain Bar. If you're conflicted out of that one or just too young, an all-ages opportunity to see that duo has presented itself on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. Go down to Vacation Vinyl in Hollywood (4679 Hollywood Blvd. at Vermont), buy some records and get pummeled.
We're excited to be able to give away two pairs of tickets to see Japan's GHOSTat Spaceland on May 21st. This is their first trip to the Unted States since they banned themselves from traveling here in protest of the Bush administration. GHOST is more psych than metal, though they occassionally can get heavy, and have enlisted the ample services of guitarist Michio Kurihara for the last 5 years or so, who you may know for his collaborations with th almighty BORIS (in particular, the loungy shogazery of Rainbow). But most people consider them a folkier version of ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE. There's almost a classical vibe which might make the Disney Hall an interesting candidate for a future show. Until then, we have the intimacy of Spaceland. Here's sample of what you might experience.
If you would like tickets, contact us here or at thecityofdevils@gmail.com.
