The Devil Went Down To Pomona

If the heart of American underground metal resided in New Orleans during the 90s, one could argue that it moved eastward to Georgia at the turn of the century.  While the quantity of bands coming out of that state is not remarkably high, the quality per capita is off the charts.  Two Georgia bands that have not yet received their proper dues -- ZOROASTER and BLACK TUSK -- will play the Viper Room next month.  Two others that have received widespread critical acclaim -- MASTODON and BARONESS -- visit the Fox Theater in Pomona on Friday.  While a lot of bands decry being labeled as part of a scene, these bands seem to embrace it and go out of their way to support one another, just like a family.  At the risk of overgeneralizing, they all started with NOLA sludge as a foundation and added a heavy dose of prog and elements of doom, psych, punk, death and thrash in various proportions to distinguish themselves.  There is no overarching sound.  Plus they can all play.  North Carolina will also make its presence felt at the Fox with the jarring prog extremes of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and the straight up good time that is VALIENT THORR.  There is no LA show on this tour but this one is surely worth the drive.
