Back in the Saddle

On Tuesday night at Spaceland, we present our third show this year with BLACK MATH HORSEMAN.  They're probably sick of us, and we wouldn't fault them for it.  They should have outgrown us by now.  Usually when we present a show at the Spacelands venues, we don't get much say in the lineup.  It's a take it or leave it kind of deal, and I think we always take it.  But this time around, we can claim a little responsibility for the lineup, and it's a real good one.  Good enough for me to give up my ROKY ERICKSON tickets I've had for awhile now.  Three of the most promising new bands in the city, along with the legends from the desert, FATSO JETSON.  Although not billed this way, it really is a record release party for Archaic Volumes, FATSO's first studio album in eight years that's been out for just a few weeks.  A special night, indeed.  We'll be buying it at the show, but The Obelisk has the record already, and says its required listening.

The last place we saw BLACK MATH HORSEMAN was the Mountain Bar in early April for a show that was supposed to serve as a warmup gig for their European Tour.  It didn't quite work out as planned.  We sent a few questions to guitairist Bryan Tulao to find out what happened.

We know that your Spring European tour did not happen because of the volcano.  How close did you get to the Old Continent?

We were ON the plane (after waiting around in the LAX bar, cause the flight kept getting pushed back with delays).  I had eaten a couple of pretty strong sleeping pills couple hours before flight, on a mission to sleep the entire flight.  That and a couple hours boozing session in the bar knocked me out cold when I finally got to my seat.  Then I got woke up by a girl saying ''We have to get off plane cause of the erupting volcano''.  I just looked at her dumbfounded  thinking ''what a weird dream'', and fell back asleep.  We never made it out of LAX.

If we ever get stranded at LAX, how should we pass our time?

There's a pretty nifty AM/PM mini market nearby that has pretty good deal on Tecate 12 packs. There's the LAX Cafe down the street that offers everything from burgers, Mexican food, Greek and Persian dishes.  I'm hesitant to give up ALLLL the amazing hidden treasures that Inglewood & the LAX area have to offer.  There are some real gems down there.

Can we expect any new recorded material soon?

We have a goal set for the new record, and that time is not too far off. We've added a couple of the new songs to our live set recently [COD: including "Black Math Horseman", which should find its way onto Tuesday's setlist].  This next record is going to be pretty different from Wyllt. We're excited.

Will volcanic ash inspire any of the new songs?

No

The good news is that you're headed to Barcelona at the end of the month to play the Primavera Sound Festival, far enough south to be ash-free.  We were there in 2007 and it was pretty insane.

We've heard such amazing things about the festival. We're very excited and honored to be playing Primavera Sound, and to play with such great bands like Les Savy Fav, Shellac & Beach House on the ATP stage.  We were invited by the ATP people, and very happily surprised that it happened.

If you could play a show with any LA band that you have not already, who would that be?

MELVINS

____________

The ticket price for this show is an insanely reasonable $5.  But we still have a few pairs to give to those who promise to tip the bartenders well.  If you want them, contact us here or email us at thecityofdevils@gmail.com with your full name.  The tickets will be awarded randomly to those that enter before 6 PM on Monday.

Also, if you want my pair for Roky Erickson, you can get the from me by showing up to the free Spaceland show Monday night with RED FANG, EARTHLINGS? and more.  Just email to set it up.
