Show of the Weekend

House of Blues?  Fuck that.   Sorry ANVIL fans, but this is to place to be on Friday.  Then mellow out and get drunker Saturday night with SCOTT BIRAM.  Nice colors.

Pumped for this show. Even having only seen Laudanum/LSoD/Valdur in November, my final 2009 show, must say this is a great space for metal of any kind. And it's utterly perfect for doom. Only critique I might offer based on that experience is that I'd be delighted to see sports coverage limited to a single TV in the bar area if not entirely eliminated...Any suggestions for the adjacent Mexican place? I didn't check it out but went for a triad post-show to-go up the street.

Only caught the last Yidhra song as an "opener" (I was slow to mobilize but also didn't expect the show to start that early in this crap weather), but the Monolith totally brought it with a new drummer. That guy's a monster--was really enjoying the furious high-hat action. Not surprised by the light turnout. "Hey, I'm not the only LA resident who despises driving in rain." Excellent post-show snack next door, way better than the post-show to-go action up the street that I experienced after Laudanum. Only regret was not going ahead and getting three tacos, especially at the Friday-Saturday-Sunday 99-cent pricepoint. Supple handmade corn torts FTW. Tried the pastor and the "al carbon" after mentioning to the cashier that the only other place I'd seen that term used was Ninfa's in Houston. She seemed to be downplaying the difference vs. asada--"It just means it's cooked over charcoal." Quality carbon flavor in any case. Definitely looking forward to future shows at the Blvd just to enjoy more tacos. Nice lean pastor that some might call dry, but I prefer that in comparison to the over-moist versions some spots offer (most egregiously the El Pique truck in Highland Park that a friend and I hit for pastor tacos after already loading up on a triad down the block at La Estrella--that taco was WAY too oily). Jireh's salsas kept my lips toasty for the drive home...
